Lost and Found Dogs

What to do if you took in/saved a Stray dog or puppies:

1 – check with neighbors to find out if someone knows/recognizes the dog.
2 – keep dog secured and safe.
3 – provide shelter, food and water.
4 – take picture/s of the dog, from kneeling level, to show size, color, body condition.
5 – send picture and information via Facebook to Best Friends . ( We DO NOT have a phone) Someone will respond to your message.
6 – include the location, day and time you found the dog/s or puppy/ies

What will happen next:
1 – you will be contacted by a volunteer from Best Friends.
2 – The picture and location at which the dog was found will be posted as LOST on the BF facebook page.
3 – you may be invited to bring the dog to the shelter, or one of the vets, to have it checked for a chip.
4 – If the dog has no collar/ID, no chip and is not recognized by local vets, it is eligible for the shelter.
5 – If there is room in the shelter, you may be able to bring the dog to us.
6 – If the shelter is already full, you will need to keep the dog until we get some space for it. You will be advised, if possible, when there may be space for the dog. We will do our best to take the dog as soon as possible!
Please note: due to a very small number of volunteers and the large number of dogs we already have requiring cleaning, feeding, and care –

~ WE CANNOT LEAVE THE SHELTER TO TRANSPORT A DOG TO THE SHELTER FOR YOU.
~ WE CANNOT LEAVE THE SHELTER TO CATCH STRAY DOGS FOR YOU.

What happens if no one claims the dog.
1 – After 3 days in our care, the dog legally becomes the property of Best Friends.
2 – If the owner does come to the shelter to claim the dog, after the 3 days, the owner is responsible the for all boarding costs for both the basic feeding and care, as well as, any shots or additional vet care needed by the dog, before the dog will be released. NO exceptions.

What to do if YOUR dog or cat gets lost?

1 – Send us a good picture of the animal, that shows markings, size, color, and condition, if possible.
2 – Send us the picture, name & gender of the animal, in what area it was last seen, and your contact information. Also what day and time the animal was last seen. Let us know if it is friendly, fearful, will come to someone if called or will run away from strangers.
3 – Send all this via our Facebook page. (We do NOT have a phone) Someone will respond to your message.
4 – The animal’s picture, name, the location, date and time it was last seen will be posted on our Facebook page, along with your contact information, so anyone spotting the animal can call you directly and expedite the capture
5 – If the animal is found and brought to us, we will contact you.
6 – If the animal is brought to us, it must be claimed within 3 days to avoid a fee. Legally, after 3 days in a shelter, the animal becomes the property of that shelter. If the owner does come to the shelter to claim the dog, after the 3 days, the owner is responsible for the costs for boarding and the basic feeding and care, as well as, any shots or additional vet care needed by the dog, before the dog will be released. NO exceptions.
